WhatIs 2.0
By Ryan Sheftel

Finally, a diffinitive program to tell you WhatIs! How many
times have you searched back thru old disks to find a program to find
that you have no idea what it is. Is it an animation? Is it a
picture? Is it a music score? WhatIs it! Well don't worry... a simple
type of "WhatIs <filename>" will tell you exactly What it Is. Or you
can run the program from the WorkBench. WhatIs can recognize 67
different file types, and more are always on the way with your help.
I do not belive in ShareWare, who ever pays anyway??? If you do feel
that this program has helped in a way that deserves reward, send me a
disk full of your best PD software, and I'll send it back full of my
best PD, and the newest version of WhatIs.
What WhatIs really needs though is more recognition capability,
sure, 67 is a lot, but more is better. The problem is that I do not
have every music program, or every graphics or animation program. So
what I ask from you is that if you find a program that WhatIs cannot
recognize, then send it to me with as much info about it you can, and
of course you will recieve a nice disk back full of great PD. This
way the program will by the best for everyone. You can reach me at:

As for the leagal mumbo jumbo... there is none, spread the word,
and the disk. Just keep this doc file with the program. If anyone
wants the source code I will be happy to share, just call or write.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Version 1.1 Notes:
Now WhatIs will give some comment about everything! If the
program is an IFF file that cannot be recognized by WhatIs, then
WhatIs will tell you the file header. The file header is a four
letter code for the file that can usually give a hint. For example if
Scuplt-Animate 5D were to come out between releases of WhatIs, WhatIs
would still tell you that the header is "SCP5".
Though this is very cryptic, at least it is something.
Version 1.2 Notes:
New identification includes NewTek Dynamic Hi-Res, NewTek
Dynamic HAM, and Sliced HAM (SHAM) pictures. Also PKAZIP (.ZIP),
LHArc (.LZH), and LHWarp (.LHW) compressed files. The archive
utility used is now LHArc, and included in the archive is WhatIs.PP,
a packed version of WhatIs created with PowerPacker.
Version 2.0 Notes:
At the request to the famous Gary Roseman, of GaryIcon fame, I
added, what else, and icon to the program! Now WhatIs can be run from
the CLI or Shell by typing the old: "WhatIs <filename>", and now
"WhatIs" alone will bring up the Arp file requester and ask for a
name to find out information about. To make it standard "WhatIs ?"
will now bring up the usage format. And... double-clicking on the
icon from WorkBench will open an output window to give the
information in, and the Arp file requester to get the name of the
file. Thanks goes to Gary for the input!
